July 2024 | Khachapuri Index dropped by 2.9%
28 July 2024

In July 2024, the average cost of cooking one standard portion of Imeretian khachapuri was 5.78 GEL, reflecting a 2.9% decrease compared to June 2024. On an annual basis, the price remained nearly unchanged, with a slight decline of 0.04% compared to July 2023.

Compared to June 2024, the prices of half of the Khachapuri Index ingredients modestly increased: Flour (+2.7%), Milk (+1.6%), and Butter (+0.7%). Meanwhile, the prices of Cheese, Eggs, and Yeast decreased by 6.4%, 4.3%, and 1.9%, respectively. Despite the Khachapuri Index showing little change over the year, significant annual inflation was observed in the prices of Butter (+18.9%), Milk (+18%), Yeast (+13.9%), and Flour (+4.8%).

When considering average prices, Tbilisi is currently the most expensive market for khachapuri ingredients, with the cost of making one standard Imeretian khachapuri standing at 6.34 GEL—9.6% higher than the national average. In contrast, Kutaisi is the most affordable location, where a single khachapuri costs 5.47 GEL. The 0.87 GEL difference between the most expensive city, Tbilisi, and the cheapest, Kutaisi, can be attributed to the tourism season. Tbilisi is a popular destination for tourists during the summer, which drives up prices, while Imereti (Kutaisi) is the largest milk-producing region in Georgia, leading to price drops during the peak milk production season.
