Electricity generation - relying mostly on Hydro Power Plants - has been increasing over the years, although not always at a rate sufficient to match demand increase, driven by rising econom
ic activity, vehicle electrification, and increased blockchain mining activities. Developed in 2017, the Electricity Market Review analyses the main trends and key events in Georgia's electricity market. It also monitors the consequences of all the changes in the electricity sector, including market liberalization and the introduction of incentive schemes for renewable energy.

In September 2021, Georgian power plants generated 1101 mln. kWh of electricity. This represents a 26% increase in total generation, compared to the previous year (in September 2020, the total generation was 877 mln. kWh). The increase in generation on a yearly basis comes from the increase of 49% in hydro power generation. Meanwhile, there was a 37% and 15% decrease in thermal power and wind power generation, respectively.

In August 2021, Georgian power plants generated 1202 mln. kWh of electricity. This represents a 27% increase in total generation, compared to the previous year (in August 2020, the total generation was 949 mln. kWh). The increase in generation on a yearly basis comes from the increase of 20% and 94% in hydropower and thermal power generation, respectively.

In July 2021, Georgian power plants generated 1240 mln. kWh of electricity. This represents a 23% increase in total generation, compared to the previous year (in July 2020, the total generation was 1010 mln. kWh). The increase in generation on a yearly basis comes from the increase of 29% in hydropower generation, while there was a decrease of 91% and 11% in thermal power and wind power generation, respectively.

In June 2021, Georgian power plants generated 1323 mln. kWh of electricity. This represents a 32% increase in total generation, compared to the previous year (in June 2020, the total generation was 999 mln. kWh). The increase in generation on a yearly basis comes from the increase of 32% in hydropower generation, as well as, from an increase in the generation of wind power by 15%.

In May 2021, Georgian power plants generated 1221 mln. kWh of electricity. This represents a 24% increase in total generation, compared to the previous year (in May 2020, the total generation was 986 mln. kWh). The increase in generation on a yearly basis comes from the increase of 26% in hydropower generation, as well as, from increase in the generation of wind power by 10%.
