December 2018 GDP Forecast | Real GDP growth is expected to reach 4.6% in 2018, as manufacturing, trade and construction sectors drive strong performance in October

Geostat recently updated its preliminary estimate of real GDP growth for the first and second quarters of 2018. The Q1 and Q2 GDP growth estimates were revised downward to 5.2% and 5.6%, respectively. The third quarter estimates so far remained unchanged.

In November 2018, Georgian power plants generated 900 mln. kWh of electricity. This represents a 7% decrease in total generati on, compared to the previous year (in 2017, total generation in November was 968 mln. kWh). The decrease in generation on a yearly basis comes from decrease in hydropower (-15%), more than offsetting the increase in thermal power generation (9%) and in WPP generation (+33%).

The average cost of cooking one standard portion of Imeretian Khachapuri stood at 3.62 GEL in November 2018. This is 0.8% higher month-on-month (compared to October 2018), and 2.2% lower year-on-year (compared to the previous November, 2017).

The state budget for 2019 is currently being discussed in Parliament and must be approved by the end of the year. According to the revised version (second version), the total budget will be around 13 billion GEL. Out of which, the Ministry of Environmental Protection and Agriculture (MEPA) will get 332 million GEL (2.4% of the total budget).

According to a nationally representative sample of 331 Georgians interviewed in early October 2018, the Consumer Confidence Index (CCI) dropped by 2.8 index points, from -15.2 in September to -18 in October. A similar pattern was observed in both sub-indices: the Present Situation Index went down by 5.3 (from -17.3 to -22.6), and the Expectations Index by 0.2 index points (from -13.1 to -13.4) compared to September.
